No one comes into this world ready to invent the next great thing or run a multi-national company. We’re all born with certain inherited traits. And for the first twelve-to-fourteen years of life we’re largely dependent on others for protection and sustenance. However, at some point in the maturation process we come to the realization that we are not our parents. We’re free to be ourselves. Free to make our own choices and decisions.

But wait. We’re not quite free yet. Why? There’s something called temperament. In many ways, temperament is our O.S. — our Operating System. It allows us to function quickly and automatically. It allows us to process information and make decisions — with such facility we may hardly notice. And that’s the point. Until we become aware of our temperament and how it operates, we can’t really see how it influences our decisions.

Just as we have learned to move beyond the confines and attitudes fostered by our parents and their surrogates, we can expand the boundaries of our personal O.S. With this realization we have more and better choices. As the masthead states at The New Temperament, we are in a position to “Compose Our Lives.” Instead of having our lives composed for us.

This New Temperament Monograph uses as a framework Napoleon Hill’s classic work, “Think and Grow Rich,” to explore the relationship between success and temperament.
